In your case, since most of your files seem to be from the 8.x era, you'll want to spend some time on VersionTracker and MacFixit checking to see if there are any 9.x-specific upgrades for themįor even older machines, like the NuBus models, sticking with 8.6 or even 8.1 is a better bet, simply because they're too old to reap most of the benefits of 9.x, and they probably haven't been upgraded with enough memory to make it run.

Now, if you're talking about an older Mac like a 9600 or 7300, along with a collection of older unupdated software, then staying with 8.6 might be the better choice. The major problem I have with 9.1 is that it does the Funky Grampa on the root level of your hard drive after installing it, so some folders get moved to Applications and some remain at the root, but once you get the hang of the new layout, it's actually pretty easy to get around. It's been out for several months, so most of the major kinks are worked out it's fast and stable on NewWorld/OpenWorld ROM machines due to some performance enhancements and optimizations (which should be documented in the articles linked) it offers much better power management on PowerBooks and iBooks, which means cooler laps and happier batteries and Software Update, now that they've fixed the connection issues for the most part, is definitely teh win for people who admin more than their own machine. If something listed in those documents affects you, you should definitely go with 9.1.
After all, A lot's changed since 8.6 was released two years ago.
